Tobash Responds to Corbett Budget Proposal

Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Berks) said today he is encouraged by Gov. Tom Corbett’s commitment to cutting state spending and acknowledging that government must live within its means.

Corbett’s $27.3 billion spending plan presented to a joint session of the General Assembly on Tuesday represents a 3.1 percent reduction in spending compared to the current year’s budget.

“A fiscally responsible budget is what we need to put the Commonwealth on the road to economic recovery,” Tobash said. “The spending of the last eight years was unsustainable. It has surpassed the citizens’ ability to pay.”

Tobash acknowledged the painful nature of some of the cuts in Corbett’s proposal and said they will be reviewed carefully by the legislature.

“There is no easy way out of the bind in which we find ourselves, but I firmly believe we can get through it by working together for the good of the taxpayers,” Tobash said. “Pennsylvania families have been making tough choices in their personal budgets, and now it is government’s turn. In the end, we will become a better, stronger Commonwealth.”

Over the next three weeks, the House Appropriations Committee will gather testimony from leaders of the various state departments and agencies about their budgetary priorities. Based on the information gathered, a budget bill will be introduced into the state House for debate.

A budget must be passed by the end of the fiscal year, June 30.
