Tobash Offers Flood Relief, Recovery Information

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN – Now that the federal government has declared a disaster in Schuylkill and 18 other Pennsylvania counties as a result of flooding from Tropical Storm Lee, Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Berks) is urging affected residents to apply for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

He is also encouraging people to reach out locally as the community rallies around those affected by the flooding.

“I know many people in Pine Grove, Klingerstown, Schuylkill Haven, Tremont and other affected areas are probably feeling overwhelmed by the damage done by the flood waters,” Tobash said. “But help is available, not only from the federal government but here in the community as well.”

Tobash’s office is also working to establish a Facebook page to serve as a virtual warehouse to connect people who have large items to donate, such as furniture, with people in need of those items.

Other assistance is available as follows.

Pine Grove
• People who need help with cleanup, such as pumping out basements, should call 570-345-4254 for assistance.
• Citizens who want to make donations or volunteer their time to help Pine Grove area residents also should call 570-345-4254.
• People who would like to donate money in support of Pine Grove area residents can do so at the Fulton Bank at 55 S. Tulpehocken St.

• St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, at 48 Main St., has food available and is providing shelter to residents without electricity or water.

All Areas
• Contact the Schuylkill United Way, which is coordinating efforts with the Red Cross, at 570-622-6421.
• People who are out of work due to the flooding can contact the Pottsville CareerLink for assistance at 570-622-5253 extension 140.
• Businesses affected by the flooding can contact the Wilkes University Small Business Development Center for assistance by calling 570-408-4340.

Federal Assistance
• To apply for federal disaster assistance from FEMA, go to, via a web-enabled mobile device, or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). People who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY should call 1-800-462-7585. For those who use 711 or Video Relay Service, call 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily until further notice.

“FEMA plans to set up a disaster recovery center locally in the near future, but there’s no need to wait to apply for assistance,” Tobash said. “Anyone who needs assistance is welcome to contact my office in Schuylkill Haven or any of my satellite offices.”

To further assist people hit hard by the flooding, Tobash is holding extended hours in his Pine Grove satellite office at 42 S. Tulpehocken St. The office will be open Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Thursday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Friday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The main office in Schuylkill Haven is located at 988 E. Main St. and can be reached by calling 570-385-8235.
