Tobash Issues Statement About Penn State University
11/15/2011
HARRISBURG – Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Berks) issued the following statement about the serious and ongoing problems associated with the leadership at Penn State University and its football program.

“Like everyone else, I am deeply disturbed by the allegations made in the grand jury report. It is unconscionable that this was allowed to go on for so long, especially since it appears some of Mr. Sandusky’s peers were aware of what was happening. There did not have to be eight victims, and we may learn of more victims as time passes.

“As I watched the story unfold, I immediately began thinking about what could have been done to prevent this. Certainly, Pennsylvania has laws in place to help protect children and to prosecute child predators. Did this tragedy result solely from a human failure to protect these children, or did the law fail them as well?

“I don’t believe we have enough information to answer that question right now. But be assured that as the case moves through the justice system, we will watch closely to identify any potential loopholes in the law.

“Today, the primary focus must be on justice and healing for anyone who may have been victimized. Additional focus must be placed on moving Penn State and the students served by its stellar academic programs forward. The university’s board of trustees is a diverse group, consisting of leaders in academia, industry, philanthropy, and athletics. I am confident they will make decisions in the best interest of the students they serve.”
