Tobash Holds Flood Ordinance and Enforcement Seminar in Schuylkill Haven
3/30/2012
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN – Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Berks) held a Flood Relief Seminar for local elected officials on Thursday, March 29, at the Penn State Schuylkill Campus in the Health and Wellness Conference Room.

In coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) long-term recovery team, Tobash prepared the educational seminar to help with efforts in mitigating future flood damages throughout the 125th Legislative District.

“It’s a well-known fact that a lot of people in Schuylkill County suffered destruction or damages to their property due to the flood waters caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee last fall,” said Tobash. “By hosting this seminar, I hope that we can create a fresh, efficient plan to deal with future flooding throughout the district.”

The program featured presentations by John Matz, Schuylkill County emergency management coordinator; Susan Smith, Schuylkill County’s planning director; and Liz Hinkel, Susquehanna Conservation District’s district manager. These presentations addressed emergency management services at the county and municipal level, Schuylkill County’s flood plain ordinance and an update on efforts relating to the watershed in Schuylkill County.

Since Lycoming County dealt with extensive damages from flooding that took place in 1996, Tobash invited John Lavelle, Lycoming County’s hazard reduction planner, who specifically addressed flood ordinances that the county has used effectively, and John Eck, a former Lycoming Township supervisor, who discussed how his township worked with the county to implement effective flood plain ordinances.

For additional information on the seminar, contact Tobash’s district office in Schuylkill Haven at (570) 385-8235.
