State PennVEST Funding Approved for Porter-Tower Joint Municipal Authority, Tobash Says
HARRISBURG – An application requesting funds to update and repair the Porter-Tower Joint Municipal Authority wastewater treatment plant in Schuylkill County was approved last week by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PennVEST), said Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Berks).

The plant was approved for a $6,855,220 low-interest loan and a $4,698,780 grant to construct a new wastewater treatment facility. The funds are being allocated to stop discharges of inadequately treated sewage during times of wet weather.

“Clean water is a necessity in all communities, and I’m very glad that our facility qualified for the funding so we can ensure that the plant is operating properly and efficiently,” said Tobash. “This funding is also said to allow a local business to grow and create a number of new jobs in our community.”

“Public health and safety is a vital role of state government, which is why I am pleased to see this grant awarded to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant in Tower City and Porter Township,” said Sen. David Argall (R-Schuylkill). “Not only will this grant be used for local infrastructure upgrades, but will provide roughly 50 new construction jobs in our area.”

“Protecting the purity of our region’s water supply is of critical importance,” said Rep. Sue Helm (R-Dauphin), whose district includes a portion of the authority’s service area. “This project is not only important for environmental reasons, but also for future economic growth. The $11.5 million dollar investment is definitely money well spent.”

The Porter-Tower facility is included in the $115 million, statewide initiative to improve water infrastructure projects that was announced last week by Gov. Tom Corbett.
