Governor’s Proposal Marks the Start of 2013-14 Budget Process, Says Tobash
2/6/2013
HARRISBURG – Following Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposed 2013-14 state budget proposal announcement, Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Berks/Schuylkill) made the following comments:

“Creating a fiscally responsible state budget is one of the most important responsibilities the General Assembly is tasked with. In this year’s budget, we’re not only charged with crafting a fiscally responsible spending plan, but we’re considering some of the most important issues our state is faced with – including transportation funding and reducing government expenses by addressing the public pension crisis.

“It is essential for my colleagues and me to act as good financial stewards as we’re considering this year’s budget. The proposal spends $28.4 billion, and that money comes from the pockets of hard-working taxpayers. It’s our duty to fund necessary services to the citizens of Pennsylvania, and I’m committed to doing so in a financially sustainable manner.

“I was encouraged by the increase in funding for basic education in this year’s proposal. I hope that as more money is appropriated to basic education in this year’s budget, the burden of school property taxes may lessen.

“The presentation of the governor’s plan in February is the starting point of a process that we expect to finalize by the end of June. At this point I have several concerns about specific program funding, and real concerns about selling off state assets to fund block grant programs, because I see that as a short-term fix.”
