Tobash Remains Committed to “True” School Property Tax Elimination
HARRISBURG – On Tuesday night, Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Berks) joined 58 of his colleagues in the state House in voting on an amendment to eliminate school property taxes in Pennsylvania. The amendment ultimately failed.
The discussion on how to address the property tax issue continued on Wednesday. House Bill 1189, a measure that would give local school districts various options on how they tax individuals and businesses to pay for the cost of our schools was voted on. The bill passed the House with a vote of 149-46; however, Tobash did not vote in favor of this measure.
Tobash made the following statement after the vote on Wednesday:
“I remain strongly in favor of eliminating property taxes altogether. Unfortunately, House Bill 1189 leaves the door open for inconsistent and potential tax increases in the future. By allowing all 500 school districts in the Commonwealth to choose taxes on personal income, earned income, business privilege and other mercantile taxes we would be establishing an even more complex and unfair system than we now have.  Furthermore, I do not believe the bill solves the property tax burden for residents living in this area.
On Tuesday evening, I voted in favor of the amendment that would allow for total property tax elimination. Although that measure was voted down by my colleagues in the House, the fact that this discussion has finally gotten to a full vote is evidence that it is gaining momentum.
We must continue to fight for property tax elimination. I will not settle for a complex scheme that does not bring consistency and fairness to the system, because that is not the solution. The solution to this issue is property tax elimination and the citizens of the district I represent have my unwavering commitment to this issue.”
House Bill 1189 was sent to the Senate for consideration on Wednesday.
