Setting the Yuengling Record Straight
1/22/2015
Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Dauphin)

D. G. Yuengling & Son is the type of private sector manufacturer Pennsylvania leaders should praise and support. Besides being America’s oldest brewing company, it is a Pennsylvania manufacturing success story to be promoted.

Yuengling, located within the 125th Legislative District, offers good-paying private sector jobs and career opportunities, and produces excellent products. It is an employer and manufacturer that pays above-market wages, full health care insurance, and has a very competitive retirement program.

Pennsylvania is still a manufacturing state; more than half a million Pennsylvanians are employed in manufacturing plants throughout the state, and millions more through supply and distribution. Manufacturing contributes more than $70 billion to Pennsylvania’s Gross Domestic Product each year, which equates to approximately 13 percent of our economy.

Gov. Tom Wolf was inaugurated Tuesday, and I can’t help but question why Yuengling products were not served at the events. No one benefits from such a decision. Yuengling offers outstanding products for everyone and is a nationally recognizable product – made here in Pennsylvania. If someone wants to order a Yuengling product, and I certainly hope they do, or any PA product for that matter, we should be doing our best to showcase and promote them.

Good, quality manufacturers such as Yuengling need to be showcased. I cannot imagine Governor Wolf would do anything other than promote a good Pennsylvania employer. He has now become the governor of Pennsylvania, serving ALL 12.6 million Pennsylvanians.

I have been in contact with the new administration, and I have invited Governor Wolf to Pottsville to tour Yuengling Brewery to discuss ways to improve the state’s job creation environment. I understand all too well that Pennsylvania manufacturers, including brewers, have challenges. By working together we can continue to improve Pennsylvania’s job environment, which remains a focus of mine during the 2015-16 legislative session.
