Tobash Responds to Governor’s Veto of Public Pension Reform
7/9/2015
HARRISBURG – Earlier today, Gov. Tom Wolf vetoed Senate Bill 1, a public pension reform measure that would establish a hybrid 401(K)-type and cash balance pension plan for future state and school employees. Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Dauphin), a long-time advocate of public pension reform, issued the following statement in regard to the governor’s announcement:

“The largest problem Pennsylvania faces is its ability to absorb nearly $2 billion in increased public pension costs in our state budget. This problem is also crushing our schools. Reform to a system that has been mismanaged by state government for decades needs to be enacted for the good of our children, retirees and taxpayers, along with state and school employees.

“Today, the governor vetoed the pension reform measure the General Assembly approved last week. Continuing to ignore the problem is not the solution, as maintaining the status quo is not good for anyone. Pennsylvania needs to join the many other states that realize government needs to operate more like the private sector to effectively serve its citizens.

“Pennsylvania is in dire need of meaningful public pension reform, and this plan would have done so without adding to our debt burden. I am deeply disappointed in the governor’s decision to veto this much-needed plan.”
