Pottsville to receive $274,500 state grant
HARRISBURG, April 8 – Pottsville will receive a $274,500 grant that will help improve sidewalks in a section of the city targeted for revitalization, state Reps. Neal P. Goodman and Mike Tobash and state Sen. David G. Argall announced.
The money is coming from the federal Community Development Block Program. Pennsylvania’s share of these grants is administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development.
“I’m pleased Pottsville is receiving its share of this important funding,” said Goodman, D-Schuylkill. “I wish Pottsville officials well in all their endeavors to improve the city.”
“I’m pleased to see Pottsville receive this important investment," Argall said. “Blight is contagious, but so is revitalization. This added boost will give the city needed funds to demolish buildings beyond repair as well as invest in tools to curb urban decay.”
“Community improvement initiatives like this are important to keeping our towns and cities up to date,” Tobash said. “I am happy to see our area get a portion of this funding.”
Pottsville City Council has proposed using $190,090 of the grant for sidewalk improvements on West Market Street. Officials have been working to revitalize West Market Street between North Centre to North Sixth streets.
The city also plans to use a portion of the grant for demolition projects and for code enforcement.
CDBG grants are used by smaller communities and rural communities for projects that include housing rehabilitation, public services, community facilities, infrastructure development and planning.
