2017-18 State Budget Helps Create a Brighter Future, Tobash Says
6/30/2017

HARRISBURG – Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Dauphin) voted in favor of the state spending plan for fiscal year 2017-18 on Friday. The budget seeks to spend $31.9 billion, a cost-effective plan which grows spending over last year to 0.2 percent. After the vote, Tobash made the following statement:

“As I said after listening to the governor’s budget address back in February, I am committed to creating a brighter future for our state and its citizens. This spending plan focuses on keeping a lid on excessive spending. I am glad that on June 30, the bipartisan budget plan I voted for supports that goal by implementing a fiscally responsible blueprint for our state. With minimal spending increases that focus on core functions of government and a commitment to paying what is owed, we are overcoming the massive expansion of state government that happened in the previous decade.

“In this year’s budget we have moved to consolidate the departments of Health and Human Services, as well as Corrections and Parole. We have streamlined services to help reduce costs and continued to respect our hard-working taxpayers. We are funding job training programs and we continue to emphasize the employment opportunities we have in our state. Just last week, the governor signed our House Bill 202 that provides career and technical education students with additional pathways to fulfilling their graduation requirements. Our economy continues to be starved for workers with skills and getting more people into these careers remains one of my highest priorities.

“Just a few weeks ago, the General Assembly and the governor accomplished another huge victory – public pension reform. We took the first step in addressing the looming financial crisis that’s been massively impacting our taxpayers, school districts and overall financial system. This solution will deliver billions in savings and help get us in better economic position for future budgets.”

The bill has been sent to the governor for his signature. Visit www.PAHouseGOP.com for more information on this year’s budget plan.
