Harrisburg Update

A quick look at what’s happening in Harrisburg
and the 125th Legislative District...

PennDOT 2018 Summer Maintenance Program

PennDOT again announced its Summer Maintenance Program for college students, which runs from April-August 2018 to supplement the permanent workforce. These students assist in completing summer maintenance work and sign upgrade services, provide maintenance and custodial services at roadside rest facilities, and perform laboring and flagging duties in maintenance organizations and highway worksites.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be 18 years old, enrolled full-time in college for the Fall 2018 semester, and have a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license. The hourly rate is $13.23. Interested applicants must apply online at to the PennDOT Summer Maintenance Program posting under the Open Jobs section of the website.

Face the State: Reforming Our Welfare System

On Sunday, Jan. 28, I was the guest on CBS 21’s, Face the State, a weekly public affairs program that airs each Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. The host, Robb Hanrahan, and I talked about the welfare reform efforts I am helping to lead in the House, and ways to contain costs and bring real reform to Pennsylvania’s welfare system. I thank them for inviting me to be part of the program. Click here to watch the program online.

Opening Up More Access to Treatment

To help those battling addiction have better access to life-saving treatment, the House passed legislation last week that would help health care professionals track down available beds at treatment centers. House Bill 825, which now goes to the Senate, would create a detoxification bed registry to facilitate treatment for drug addiction. The proposal would require the Department of Human Services to develop and administer an internet-based detoxification bed registry to collect, aggregate and display information about available beds in public and private inpatient psychiatric facilities and licensed detoxification and rehabilitation facilities.

The registry would contain information for facilities and licensed providers; the number of beds available at a facility; and a search function to identify available beds that are appropriated for the treatment of a substance abuse emergency. This legislation is in addition to several other bills having passed the House in the last few years to help fight the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania. I will continue to work on this important issue.

Trout Stocking Schedules Now Available
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced that the 2018 adult trout stocking schedules are now available online at and on the PFBC’s “FishBoatPA” mobile app. The PFBC annually stocks approximately 3.15 million adult trout in 720 streams and 126 lakes open to public angling. These figures include approximately 2 million rainbow trout; 640,000 brown trout; and 500,000 brook trout. The average size of the trout produced for stocking is 11 inches in length. New Medicare Cards: Watch Out for Scams
Beginning April 2018, Medicare beneficiaries will receive a New Medicare Card that will have a unique Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI), thereby removing the Social Security number from the Medicare card. Medicare will automatically mail the new card at no cost to the address on file with Social Security. Medicare beneficiaries should ensure their official mailing address with the Social Security Administration is current but otherwise do not need to do anything to receive their card. More information about the cards – including a fact sheet and video -- is available at The distribution of new cards will take about a year.
