Harrisburg Update

A quick look at what’s happening in Harrisburg
and the 125th Legislative District...

Visit My Senior Expo on Sept. 7

Come out and visit my fifth annual Senior Expo on Friday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Pine Grove Hose Hook and Ladder, 1 Orchard St., in Pine Grove.

This event is for residents who are 60 years of age or older. I look forward to my Senior Expo every year and enjoy spending time with so many of my constituents.

More than 35 vendors will be in attendance, including representatives from the Office of Attorney General, who will be providing presentations on consumer protection and scams related to senior citizens. The Schuylkill County Sheriff’s Office will also be in attendance.

Door prizes and lunch will be available. I hope to see you on Sept. 7.

Fun Times at the Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Convention
The 64th Annual Schuylkill County Volunteer Firefighters Convention took place last week and is a meaningful yearly event. Approximately 200 units joined in the seven-division parade on Saturday, Aug. 26. The week-long event featured fire department volunteers displaying their modern trucks, equipment and apparatus, as well as a few historical, blaze-battling pieces.

The first day is traditionally one that remembers those in the volunteer firefighting service who lost their lives keeping their communities safe. A memorial service was held at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church to begin the weeklong convention that culminates in a parade.

Firefighters marched down Tulpehocken Street to the church this past Saturday in Pine Grove. Several high school bands, including those from Pine Grove, Shenandoah Valley and Nativity, offered musical salutes.

This event brings firefighters from across Schuylkill County together and is a great way of honoring and promoting their service to their communities. Many of these fire companies have junior firefighter programs and a lot of them are looking for more volunteers.

Ninety custom-designed trophies were awarded at the convention’s conclusion. They featured bricks from the former Pine Grove Brick Company, the site of the current HH&L station.

Pitman Bridge Renamed
Recently, it was my honor to be part of ceremonies to dedicate the Pitman Bridge across the Mahantango Creek as the Abner Yoder Memorial Bridge.

Yoder, a technical sergeant in World War II, was an aircraft mechanic and drew chief in the 405th Bomb Squadron, 38th Bomb Group in the Army Air Corps. He died in a plane crash in 1944 in New Guinea when he was only 26.

He was buried at the Manila American Cemetery, so he could be close to his wartime buddies.

A House of Representatives citation was presented to Yoder’s family in his memory.

We have a country that is protected and have people who put their lives at risk. I’m happy that we’ve been able to do this well-deserved act.

Small Business Spotlight: Ashland Technologies
Ashland Technologies, Inc. (Ash-Tec) is a leading contract manufacturer of machined and fabricated parts. Located in Hegins, it is known for manufacturing roller coaster cars and other items for amusement parks arcades.

The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development wrote a nice feature story on this valuable business to the 125th Legislative District.

Ash-Tec was the initial partner in the pilot program that I launched – the Business Education Partnership established under Act 168 of 2014, which provides continuing education for teachers who participate in manufacturing facility tours.
