State Representative Mike Tobash represents the 125th Legislative District, which spans portions of Schuylkill and Dauphin counties. A Schuylkill County native, Tobash is serving his fourth term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
As a state representative, Mike is focused on improving the job climate, integrating and connecting our business and education communities, reducing the tax burden on citizens and employers, right sizing government by enacting responsible budgets, and defending our constitutional rights.
During the 2017-18 legislative session, Mike is serving on the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Education, Insurance, and Liquor Control committees. Additionally, Mike is serving as a deputy policy chair for the House Majority Policy Committee. The committee travels statewide, conducting meetings about important state issues, and gathering information from key stakeholders.
Mike’s work includes the largest issue currently facing Pennsylvania by reforming the massively underfunded public pension systems, which are more than $50 billion in debt. Working with his colleagues on meaningful reform during the 2013-14 legislative session, his solution, the first step in addressing this issue, comes in the form of a hybrid pension plan for future state employees. This approach has been estimated to save the Commonwealth between $11 billion and $15 billion over a 30-year period.
Additionally, Mike has been able to enact meaningful legislation supporting the anthracite coal and automotive industries, brought about changes to cut back on standardized testing in our schools and has made it possible for teachers to get continuing education credits by learning more about local job opportunities. He has also worked to bring valuable resources back to the region to improve our infrastructure and protect the area through flood mitigation projects.
Born and raised in Schuylkill County, he understands the concerns and challenges of working in a family-owned business as the owner of Tobash Insurance Agencies.
Mike remains very active in the community. He currently serves as an ex-officio member of the Penn State University Schuylkill Advisory Board and as a charter member of the Tri-Valley Lions Club. He is a past advisory board president of the St. Joseph Center for Special Learning, past board president of the Family Service Agency, and former member of the Schuylkill United Way. He is also a member of the National Rifle Association, Valley View Gun Club, Good Intent Fire Company, Friedensburg Fish and Game Association, and Trout Unlimited.
He is a graduate of Tri-Valley High School and Elizabethtown College, where he earned a degree in business administration management and marketing. Mike and his wife, Amie, reside in Pottsville with their daughters, Lexi and Mikaela.
